Selling on Amazon in Belgium: The Complete 2026 Guide

Seller account, VAT, real fees, FBA or FBM, product listings: the complete guide to selling on Amazon from Belgium without costly beginner mistakes.

Selling on Amazon from Belgium appeals to more and more small and mid-sized companies, and for good reasons: an additional sales channel, immediate visibility, and direct access to the French, German and Dutch markets without opening a subsidiary. But between the seller account, VAT, referral fees, logistics and the search algorithm, many companies lose money for six months before they understand how the platform actually works. This guide covers the concrete decisions to make before you sell your first unit, with real numbers and examples.

The Belgian Amazon market in 2026: what you need to understand

Belgium has a quirk few sellers anticipate: shopping traffic is fragmented across several marketplaces. Amazon.com.be has existed since late 2022, but a significant share of French-speaking consumers keeps buying on Amazon.fr, while Dutch-speaking shoppers split between Amazon.nl and the local competitor Bol.

The practical consequence: thinking only in terms of "Amazon Belgium" is a framing error. A Belgian seller who wants volume is in reality working a set of three to five European marketplaces, with a single account and a single catalogue.

The second structural point is competitive maturity. On Amazon.fr, most consumer categories are already occupied by professional sellers who invest in advertising. On Amazon.com.be, competition is lower but so is volume. A smart launch often starts on the Belgian marketplace, to break in listings and inventory, then expands into France and Germany.

Seller or Vendor: the two ways to sell on Amazon

Amazon offers two very different models, and the choice shapes everything else.

Seller Central (3P)Vendor Central (1P)
Who sells to the customerYouAmazon
AccessOpen to allBy Amazon invitation only
Price controlYou set itAmazon sets it
MarginHigher, variable feesLower, negotiated wholesale price
Cash flowPayout every 14 daysSupplier terms of 30 to 90 days
Data availableComplete and real-timePartial, via retail analytics

For a Belgian SME, the answer is almost always Seller Central. Vendor Central transfers control of price and availability to Amazon, which is untenable for a brand that also sells through its own site or a distributor network. We cover both models in our Amazon agency services.

Note the vocabulary: ASIN is the unique identifier of each product on Amazon, Buy Box is the default purchase area on a listing, and FBA is Amazon's own fulfilment programme.

Opening a seller account: documents and pitfalls

Creating the account takes an hour; validation often takes two to three weeks. Prepare:

  • your Belgian company number (BCE/KBO) and the matching VAT number;
  • a valid business credit card in the company's name;
  • a bank account in a country Amazon accepts;
  • an ID document for the legal representative and proof of address less than 90 days old;
  • the articles of association or a recent company register extract.

Three pitfalls come up systematically:

  1. Address inconsistency. If the company register address, the bank address and the proof of address differ, verification stalls. Align everything before you start.
  2. Opening an individual account by mistake. The individual account is free but charges 0.99 euro per sale, caps at 40 sales per month and blocks access to Amazon Ads. The professional account costs 39 euros excluding VAT per month and pays for itself from 40 sales.
  3. Gated categories. Cosmetics, food supplements, toys and electrical products require extra documents (CE certificates, safety data sheets, supplier invoices). Get those documents ready before going live, not after.

The VAT question, explained simply

As long as your stock stays physically in Belgium and you ship to other EU countries, you declare cross-border sales through the OSS one-stop shop, using your Belgian VAT number. That is the simplest case.

As soon as your stock is held in an Amazon warehouse in another country (which happens automatically if you enable certain pan-European programmes), you create a VAT registration obligation in that country. A seller who enables the pan-European programme without realising it can end up with five to seven registrations to regularise, at a management cost of 2,000 to 5,000 euros per year.

The practical rule: master the single-country model first, then extend inventory country by country, as a conscious decision. Other regulatory obligations are covered on our Amazon compliance page.

What selling on Amazon really costs

This is where business plans break. Here is a realistic breakdown for a product sold at 29.90 euros including VAT in Belgium, on FBA.

Line itemAmountComment
Selling price incl. VAT€29.90
VAT 21%-€5.19Paid to the state
Price excl. VAT€24.71Amazon's calculation base
Amazon referral fee 15%-€3.718 to 15% depending on category
FBA fee (standard 500 g parcel)-€3.60Pick, pack, delivery
Monthly storage-€0.15Higher from October to December
Landed product cost-€7.50Purchase plus freight
Advertising (20% ACOS)-€4.94Amazon Ads budget
Net margin€4.8119.5% of the price excl. VAT

Two lessons. First, the referral fee plus FBA plus advertising trio often absorbs 40 to 50% of the price excluding VAT: a product with a gross margin below 55% is hard to make viable on Amazon. Second, advertising is the only genuinely steerable variable in the short term, which is why controlling ACOS matters, as explained in our article on ACOS and TACOS.

Official fee schedules are published by Amazon and updated each year, generally in January and July. Check them before any profitability calculation, particularly year-end storage fees, which nearly triple between October and December.

FBA or FBM: the logistics choice from Belgium

FBA means Fulfilment by Amazon: you send your stock to Amazon's warehouses, and Amazon handles picking, shipping, customer service and returns. FBM means Fulfilment by Merchant: you ship yourself.

FBA has three advantages that are hard to work around: Prime eligibility, which mechanically raises conversion rate, better access to the Buy Box, and the removal of operational workload. The price you pay is a fixed cost structure per unit and total dependence on the stock you have placed with Amazon.

FBM still makes sense in four cases: bulky or heavy products, slow-moving products, made-to-order or personalised products, and brands that already run an efficient warehouse in Belgium with negotiated carrier rates.

For a Belgian seller, the most common middle option is to send stock to a French or German distribution centre, where the volume is, while keeping part of the catalogue on FBM for slow-moving references. The full reasoning is in our Amazon FBA guide.

Building a listing that sells

On Amazon, a listing plays two roles at once: it has to convince the shopper and feed the internal search algorithm, which decides which listings appear on which queries.

Priorities, in order:

  1. The title. Main keyword in the first words, then brand, then distinguishing attributes (material, volume, compatibility). No keyword stuffing, and mind the character limit in force, detailed in our article on the 75 character limit.
  2. The images. Seven visuals minimum: one cut-out image on white, three in-use images, one image with dimensions, one benefit infographic, one lifestyle image. Listings with seven visuals convert markedly better than those with three.
  3. The bullet points. Five bullets, one idea per bullet, benefit first and technical characteristic second.
  4. Backend keywords. 250 bytes of non-visible search terms: synonyms, common misspellings, Dutch translations for the Belgian market. Never repeat a word already in the title, it is already indexed.
  5. A+ Content. Available after Brand Registry enrolment, it replaces the text description with visual modules. Its impact on conversion rate typically measures between 5 and 10%.

A simple test: open your listing on mobile, where most traffic happens. If the title is truncated before the main benefit and the first three images do not explain the product, the listing is not ready. The full method is on our Amazon SEO page.

The five most expensive mistakes

Launching without an advertising budget. A new listing has no sales history and no reviews. Without Amazon Ads it stays invisible. Budget 500 to 1,500 euros over the first six weeks to generate the first data.

Underestimating receiving time. Between shipping stock and being effectively on sale, expect 5 to 15 working days of warehouse receiving. A launch timed for Black Friday therefore has to leave in early October.

Launching with too wide a catalogue. Thirty references launched at once dilute the advertising budget and your attention. Three to five well-executed references produce more revenue in the first year.

Ignoring the return rate. In some categories such as apparel it exceeds 20%. A business plan built on a zero return rate is off by a third of the margin.

Not protecting your brand. Without Brand Registry, any reseller can piggyback on your listings, undercut the price and make you lose the Buy Box. Registration requires a trademark filed with the Benelux office or EUIPO, and takes four to six months. Start it before the first euro of advertising.

FAQ

Do you need a company to sell on Amazon in Belgium? Yes, in practice. Amazon requires a valid company number and a VAT number for a professional account. An individual can open a personal account, but it is capped at 40 sales per month and gives access to neither advertising nor brand tools.

Can you sell on Amazon.fr and Amazon.de from Belgium? Yes. A single European account gives access to EU marketplaces, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. VAT obligations change as soon as stock is physically moved to another country.

How much do you need to invest to start on Amazon? A serious single-product launch generally requires between 5,000 and 15,000 euros: initial inventory, visuals, shipping to the warehouses and the advertising budget for the first three months.

Is Amazon.com.be enough to reach the Belgian market? No. A large share of French-speaking Belgian shoppers still order on Amazon.fr, and Dutch-speaking ones on Amazon.nl. The three marketplaces are worked together.

How long before the first sales? First sales often arrive within two weeks of going live with an advertising budget. Stable organic ranking takes more like three to six months.

Conclusion: where to actually start

Selling on Amazon in Belgium is neither a magic channel nor a bad idea: it is a demanding channel that rewards preparation. The three decisions that determine success are taken before the first sale: the model (Seller rather than Vendor), the cost structure (a gross margin above 55%) and the starting scope (three to five references, one or two marketplaces).
